Seiko Kinetic – an introduction
Seiko dive watches became incredibly popular in the 1970’s with their range of dive watches with Automatic movements. These are MECHCANICAL watches “automatically” wound from the natural movement of the wrist. The only downside to a mechanical watch is their accuracy. It’s fair to expect +/- 2 minutes per day for most affordable automatics. That’s where a Kinetic watch comes in – QUARTZ accuracy (+/- 2 secs per day) with self charging convenience.
What is a KINETIC watch movement
We have the choice of several systems in our wrist watches – hand wound mechanical watches (proper old school), automatically wound mechanical watches (my favourite), SOLAR powered watches charged by the sun and KINETIC watches. Solar powered and Kinetic movements both feature a quartz crystal. Unlike a solar powered watch charged by energy stored within light – a Kinetic watch charges the battery from kinetic energy. It’s basically a combination of an automatic watch and a quartz watch. Kinetic energy is the energy an item possesses due to its’ motion. Motion from the wearer of the watch causes the semi-circular rotor to turn a miniature electrical generator that subsequently charges the battery.
In effect, the watch has turned kinetic energy in to electrical energy – think like a dynamo on a bike – pedalling spins the dynamo which in turn charges the batteries which in turn power the light.
If the watch hasn’t been moved for a day or two – unlike an automatic watch – it will continue to run. My current Seiko Kinetic will run for nearly 20 days WITHOUT being moved .. great if you like wearing different watches. If you want to know more please visit the Seiko Watches site
Expect to pay….
Expect to pay anywhere in the region of £200 to £3,000 depending on the precise model. It’s a little confusing with such a big range in prices. Be careful not to buy an OVER-PRICED model.
Take time to research the specific model you are interested in. Check if it is available NEW in BOX from Amazon, WatchShop, JuraWatches etc. I have seen £250 brand new watches selling on eBay for £400 – oversold, referred to as RARE etc. Please do your research.

More Seiko Prospex Dive Watches
This is just one of the many Seiko Prospex dive watches listed for sale on ChronoDivers.com. For the iconic Automatic dive watch that everyone should own take a look at the Seiko SKX009 – classic Pepsi styling with automatic movement. For a softer design Seiko have their Turtle design with smooth “turtle shell” like rounded lugs. They do produce Automatic, Kinetic and Solar versions – so make sure you check you’re getting what you want.
If you like something more “angular” then we have the Seiko Samurai – with lugs designed to imply they’ve been hacked with a Samurai sword – again – check it’s a Kinetic version if that’s what you’re after.
