A Short History of Oris Watches
Oris has a long history in watchmaking going back to 1904. They are one of only a handful of truly independent Swiss watch makers. Oris takes it’s name from a brook located close to the original factory in Hölstein, Switzerland. Unlike the true premier brands such as Rolex and Blancpain, Oris don’t make their own movements. They do, however, use the finest Swiss ETA movements as a template for their own watches, adding features to accommodate their own requirements.
Oris is an honest brand that produce value for money, competent, underwater timepieces. Their products are akin to the TAG Heuer Aquaracer range, Longines Hydroconquest & Legend Diver and the Breitling Superocean dive watches. Professional use dive watches that do what they should at a price that won’t break the bank. Most can be identified by their see-through exhibition case-backs with their trademarked distinctive red rotors introduced in 2002.
ChronoDivers’ mission is to introduce visitors to luxury divers watch brands sometimes overlooked in favour of the leading marques (think Omega, Breitling etc). I’ve had a couple of Oris watches over the years and I’ve never been disappointed. Swiss Quality & Value for Money.
Oris Aquis 300m to 1000m Professional Diver’s watch
The most popular models in their current line up of diving watches are the Oris Aquis (WR to 1000m) and the Oris Divers Sixty Five (WR to 100m). The watch featured below is the Oris Aquis – a range of competent timepieces developed for professional use in harsh marine environments.
An appealing feature of the Aquis collection is the breadth of styles and case sizes. Not everyone wants a “look at me” 45mm dive watch on their wrist. The current range of Aquis start at 36.5 and 39.5mm going through to a nice “mid-sized” 41.5 to 43.5mm.

Oris Aquispro – 1000 metres with RSS
The larger watches in the 45 to 50mm range are their more professional models like the 1000 metre Aquispro Date and the Aquis Depth Gauge. The Aquispro features a stealthy black DLC coated titanium case. A key feauture of the Aquispro is Oris’s patented Rotation Safety System – otherwise known as RSS. The diver can adjust and lock the uni-directional rotating bezel into place with the chunky rubber grip. It’s powered by the Calibre 400 automatic movement with a five-day power reserve. With it’s elevated levels of anti-magnetism this movement comes with a 10-year warranty.

Oris Aquis Depth Gauge – 500m
Honestly – we didn’t know Oris produced a dive watch with a Depth Gauge. Now that we do and we’ve watched a few videos about how it works – we all want an Oris Depth Gauge! Such a simple system but also so clever. This watch comes in a sensible 45.8mm stainless steel case with TWO straps – a rubber dive watch and a smart steel bracelet. The straps use Oris’s Quick Strap Change system making it easy to switch between the two. The black diver’s strap has an gadget for easy adjustment adding extra circumference to fit over a wetsuit.

A small hole in the crystal allows water in to a channel that runs around the outside. The deeper you dive – the more the water pressure entering the hole increases. As it rises it pushes the outer yellow dial around in an clockwise direction. The depth reading is taken from the number at the 12 o’clock position – starting at 1 metre and increasing in 1 metre intervals up to 10 metres. It then follows with 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 25 and 30 metres. The mixed gas depths of 40, 50, 70 and 100 metres are highlighted in bright yellow. Simple – but GENIUS !

Oris Divers Sixty Five re-inventing their 1965 dive watch
Most in demand is the Oris Divers Sixty Five model (introduced in 2015) which celebrates the production of their first dive watches in 1965. Hidden under what appears to be a vintage aesthetic – these classic dive watches are engineered using state-of-the-art techniques. The Divers Sixty Five range covers cases from 36mm to 43mm – available in many designs including a beautiful Chronograph version.
Can I dive in an Oris Diver’s 65
The purist diver will probably tell you that a watch must be certified water resistant to a depth of 200m to qualify as a DIVER’S WATCH. That’s basically true as that’s what the ISO6425 dive watch certification states. However, let’s be honest, how many of these watches will ever be used beyond surface swimming or even just a dip in the bath. Oris has stuck to the origins of their original 1965 diver’s watch which was “just” 100m water resistant. Officially a watch certified 100m WR is means it is possible to swim or snorkel with the watch on, but it is not appropriate for scuba diving.

What to pay for a pre-owned Oris Dive watch
The price of a pre-owned Oris watch always surprises us at ChronoDivers – you get a LOT of watch, from a luxury Swiss brand, for a reasonable price. Expect to pay about £900 to £1200 for an Oris Divers Sixty Five – unless it’s the chronograph. A nice clean example of the Chronograph with box and papers will set you back £1,800, possibly as much as £2,400. For an Oris Aquis you might be lucky and find a nice one for under £1,000 with full set – the hard to find Aquis GMT and Aquis SMALL SECONDS commanding even more, £1,500+
There are a few “special” versions like the 1000m professional Oris AquisPro Date Calibre 400 – these will easily fetch £2,400 to £2,800. And then there’s my personal favourite the Oris Aquis Depth Gauge (500m WR) – a stunning watch with a clear display of meters below the surface (0 to 100m). These are very hard to find so expect to pay over £1,500 to £2,500 for a pristine example. Finally, for a good example of an Oris Pro Diver (full set etc) anything from £1,500 to £2k.

Alternatives to Oris divers watches
If the Oris brand appeals then please also consider a diver’s watch from either Doxa, Sinn, Tissot or Longines. Just like the Oris brand the range of Doxa dive watches is often overlooked in favour of better known brands such as TAG Heuer and Omega. Most popular in their dive watch collection are the Doxa Sub 200, the glorious Doxa Sub 300T (with no-decompression bezel timer) and, our favourite, the reborn Doxa 600T built from marine grade stainless steel. Next we’d recommend something exotic from the range of Sinn dive watches. Most popular in their dive watch collection are the Sinn U1 (1000m), the Sinn U2 (2000m & dual time) and, our favourite, the Sinn UX range with HYDRO technology.

If nothing their grabs your attention then wander over to the more traditional, yet equally desirable range of dive watches from Tissot and Longines. Tissot is a brand with a long and intimate relationship with the sea and in particular – divers watches. Join us as we take the plunge and dive in to the Tissot Seastar dive watch range. Most popular are the Tissot Seastar 1000 and the deep diving Seastar 2000 with Powermatic 80 automatic movement. Longines is another company with a long relationship promoting outdoor life, sports and adventure. Like Rolex, Blancpain and Breitling – Longines entry in to Diver’s watches goes back to 1959! The new Longines Hydroconquest is their most desirable timepiece. A watch dedicated to men and women who demand high end performance from their timepiece without compromising on technical innovation and elegance.
