The Breitling SuperOcean first appeared in 1957 – the same year as the Omega Speedmaster and just 4 years after the Rolex Submariner and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Fast forward to present day we have a range of superlative chronometers – all COSC certified – in a range of colours, sizes and materials. One thing they all have in common – is the DNA of the original Breitling dive watch from 1957.

Breitling Superocean 48, 46, 44, 42 & Heritage B20 discovered recently

All the watches shown below have been sold this year on eBay. We’ve found very nice, full set examples of Superocean 48, 46, 44 and 42 and several highly desirable Superocean B20 Heritage 46 models. It might not be the first place that springs to mind when looking to buy, or sell, a Breitling watch – but it’s definitely worth checking.

Many timepieces selling for over £1,500 (or $1,500) in the UK (USA) are covered by the eBay Certificate of Authenticity. Keep an eye out for the BLUE TICK on the listing. If it’s got the BLUE TICK – you know it’s a 100% genuine Breitling – independently certified.

What to pay for a pre-owned Superocean

As with all luxury dive watches the key factors in the selling price are provenance, condition and full set (original box & papers). A nice clean pre-owned Superocean A17266 42 mm will sell for at least £1,500 – up to £2,750 for a real nice example in A1 condition, full set etc.

Similarly, a classic style used Superocean Heritage 42 should fetch anything from £1,900 to £2,500. The Chronograph models and also those with bi-colour case and strap often sell for double those prices, around £4,000 to £5,000.

The new Superocean Sea Watch collection

Earlier we took a look at the reinterpreted Superocean Heritage models – in the classic 1957 style. Below are some examples of the NEW in 2022 Superocean collection of Sea Watches. That’s a term Breitling themselves use for these watches – underlying their appeal to all water-sport enthusiasts. Not a watch reserved for professional divers – but a timepiece that can be worn by everybody.

Kelly Slater – professional surfer

We’re already massive fans of this fresh style with the high contrast inner dial ring and inlaid ceramic bezel. Not only is this style aesthetically pleasing – it’s also a safety aid for divers. The chunky luminescent indexes and bold squared-off hands all help with maximum legibility and clarity at depth. It’s not surprising that the Superocean is endorsed by the world famous surfer Kelly Slater (the orange dial with a green strap)

Sea Watches in Bronze, Steel & Gold

This new range of “Sea Watches” is available in four sizes from the largest 46mm down to 36mm with a 44 and 42 in-between. The distinctive coloured dials have been matched with different case metals to give a standout contrast. The three cases are brushed steel, a rich steel and gold mix and a classy bronze. Bronze is a tricky material to work with as it can corrode a little uncontrollably. Breitling use a special bronze alloy in the 44 / 42 mm models with a high resistance to corrosion. However, it’s been designed to subtly allow the bronze to gain a unique patina over time.

Superocean A17366 and A17367

When browsing the pre-owned watch stores like Chrono24, Watchfinder and Bob’s Watches two very popular models are the Superocean A17366 and the A17367. Thankfully these models are still available NEW and have remained in the current Superocean collection. The watches shown below are all A17366 models in the 42 mm steel case with exception of the last one – a Superocean A17367 44 mm model.

Is this SOH 57 a worthy addition to the Superocean line? or is there too much overlap with the Superocean Heritage II that carries the more substantial and contemporary flair? My own opinion- this is a watch I will not rush out to add to my own collection, but I can certainly appreciate and enjoy it. Is Breitling a good investment? yes and no. As with most luxury watch brands at this time the market is very volatile. It makes sense to follow the value of a specific model on a website like WATCHCHARTS.com. Our philosophy is simple – if you’re buying a watch to make money – forget it, there are better long term investments. If you are buying it because you love the craftsmanship, engineering, innovation and beauty – get your cash out now.

Answering the question – Is Breitling watch a Good Investment? – it’s a lifestyle investment and something you can pass on to your children. Please don’t just buy it and hide it away in a safe – that’s not how to make money.

Are Breitling as good as Rolex? – in the opinion of the ChronoDivers team – YES – but it depends if we’re comparing apples with apples. Taken £ for £ or $ for $ – there’s more value for money in the Breitling than the Rolex, especially on the second hand, pre-owned watch market. Spending £7K / $8K on a Rolex just about gets a Submariner, if you’re prepared to wait. A couple of thousand less and you’re looking at the top end of the Breitling collection – a Breitling Superocean III Black and 18ct Rose Gold 42 Automatic for example at £5K / $6K

How Waterproof Is The Breitling Superocean? The current Superocean III are 300 metres water resistant / 1000 feet. If extreme depth is something you are looking for then consider the Breitling Superocean Automatic 46 with a water resistant rating of 2000 metres / 6600 feet
